Susanna "Susan" Shaw was born in County Wexford in 1810. She was the daughter of William Shaw (1786 - 1879) and Mary Waldron (1790 - 1820). Susan grew up with two brothers: Robert Shaw (1812-1900) and Thomas Shaw (1816-1901).
Susannah and her family left Ireland and sailed to Canada in 1820. Her mother died due to an illness on board ship at Amherst Island, Upper Canada just before arriving in Kingston.
Her father continued with the three children landing Kingston. He then bought the land and built the farm now called Hogsback Hill Farm outside of Escott, Leeds County. She and her two brothers grew up in the beautiful stone house which is still standing today after 200 plus years.
Susanna met and married firstly, John McNickle (1810-1862) some time before 1833. He was the local Innkeeper. They had three children John, McNickle (1834 - 1888), Mary (McNickle) Storey (1837- 1921) and Susannah (McNickle) Phillips (1838-1908).
As a single parent, she continued with the Inn and also the Escott Mills.
Susannah married secondly to Thomas (Abrams) Abraham (1827-1892) on July 8, 1860. He would then take over in helping her with the Inn. They did not have any children. Thomas passed away in 1892.
Susannah (Shaw) McNickle Abraham died 15 September 1899, at the age of 89 in the home she grew up in at Hogsback Hill Farm in Escott, Leeds and Grenville United Counties in Ontario, Canada. She was buried at Escott Cemetery.
