Biography

Charles was born in either late 1841 or early 1842 depending on which source you look at. On the 1850 census, which was enumerated on the 16th of August, his age is stated as 9 years of age. The family relocated to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada sometime in the 1850's. Charles is next found in the 1861 Canadian census in Peterborough giving his age as 19. No image was available to see what the enumeration date was. On his enlistment papers on the 21st of August 1863 he gives his age as 22. He gave his age as 29 on the 1871 Canadian census. He is enumerated on the 1880 census in Turtle Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin and gives age as 38 and single. In 1883 Charles he has a daughter Ida Edna in Gilmer, Upshur, Texas. There is a Charles Shaw that owns a shingle mill that is in operation for one year in Gilmer, Upshur, Texas during 1884. On his admission papers for the U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers on April 8, 1909 he is listed as 68 years of age. Charles Shaw passed away in a Veterans Home in Malibu, California in1921.

Marriage: Charles abandoned his wife and three children and marries Melissa Arebell Corey in Wisconsin September 12, 1880.
