"Shaw was fortunate to have a benefactor, Dr. G. C. Marchant, who allowed Shaw to study in his office and later financed his medical education at the University of Pennsylvania, where Shaw received his M.D. and two certificates of surgery in 1838. After graduation Shaw began a practice in Indiantown, Currituck County."[2]

Henry M Shaw was born 20 Nov 1817 in Rhode Island. He appears on the 1850 US Census living in Indian Ridge, Currituck, North Carolina with his wife, Mary (Trotman) 29 and children: William 6, Henry 2, and Marchant 5 months of age. His occupation is physician. [4]
Shaw is listed on the 1860 US Census at the same residence, Indian Ridge, Currituck, North Carolina. His occupation is farmer; his real estate value is $20,000 and his personal estate value is $29,000. In addition to his wife, Mary, his children are: William B. 16; H.M. Shaw 10; Mary T. 7; and S.E. Shaw a female,10 months old. It appears that Marchant listed in 1850 is no longer living. [5] Shaw owned 26 slaves according to the 1860 Slave Census. [6]
Henry M Shaw was commissioned as a Colonel in the 8th Reg., North Carolina Infantry, State Troops on May 16, 1861. He received orders from Gen. Cooper, Adj. Gen. CSA, Richmond, VA on Sept. 11, 1861, to "proceed without delay with all the full companies ready for the field in his regiment, from Warrington to Roanoke Island, and report for duty to the commanding officer there, if senior, if not, establish a separate camp, and report to the comanding officer of the Confederate Troops in that vicinity. One of the Field Officers of the Regiment will be left at Warrinton to follow with the other companies as soon as they can be organized and equipped. ..." On Feb. 4, 1862, Shaw wrote Brig. Gen. H.A. Wise requesting light artillery to be set to his position on Roanoke Island. "I take occasion to report to you that the effective force on this Island, exclusive of the detachments on duty at the (?), is only about 800 rank and file." [7]
