Samuel Shaw is thought to have been born in Northern Ireland in about 1709. He had a membership certificate from the Lisburn Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (a.k.a. Quakers) in County Antrim, Ireland. He was received into the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Chester County, Pennsylvania on 25 October 1729, the eighth month of the Julian calendar.[1] In 1734 he moved to Maiden Creek, Pa., where he resided when he and Mary Nixon declared their intention to marry at a meeting held 30th October 1737.[2]

In 1741 he purchased a farm of 250 acres in Richland, Pennsylvania.[3][4] Samuel lived there until he passed away in 1781.[5] The names of several relations were listed in an abstract of the Will of Samuel Shaw, of Richland, Yeoman.[6]
