Biography

William was born May 7th, 1690 to Israel Shaw and Mercy Ruth Tallman, in Little Compton, Newport, Rhode Island [Little Compton, Bristol, Plymouth Colony], USA[1]

James Arnold in the Vital Record of RI almost certainly listed the wrong woman as the wife of William SHAW I. Other records show that Content IRISH married Joseph LAWTON 4 Jan 1714/15, with whom she had 5 children, the first, Elizabeth, born on the 19th of December 1715.

John IRISH, father of Content IRISH, made a will containing a legacy of 20 pounds for his daughter Content. He died before 20 Mar 1714. The executors' reckoning recorded the payment of that legacy to his daughter and son-in-law Content and Joseph Lawton in 1717.

Content, the wife of William Shaw, on the other hand, gave birth to her third known child, Israel on 9 April 1715.

After Joseph LAWTON died, Content married William WILBOR 16 Sep 1728 and with him had 3 more children.

Content WILBOR, widow, made her will 20 May 1751, which was proved on 10 Jun 1751. She mentions her sons John LAWTON, Benjamin WILBOR, and Jonathan WILBOR, deceased. Daughters Rebecca Hile, Elizabeth Tayler, and Content WILBOR. Granddaughter Prissilla Shearman. She does not mention ANY of her supposed SHAW children or grandchildren.

A circumstantial case can be made for the maiden name of William SHAW's wife Content:

At least two of William SHAW I's siblings married two of Thomas WOOD and Content THURSTON's children: Anthony SHAW, b. 1694, married Rebekah WOOD and Hannah SHAW, b. 1699, married William WOOD. It is possible that Content WOOD, b. 1694, who also married a SHAW joined her siblings by marrying into the same SHAW family and was the Content who became the wife of William SHAW I.

Children

Elizabeth Shaw Jan . 9, 1712.
William Shaw Jan . 1, 1714.
Israel Shaw April 9, 1715.

His will is dated 7 February 1763 and recorded in Little Compton, Rhode Island on 3 February 1767.[2] His inventory was taken on 2 September 1766 and recorded on 9 February 1767.[2]

Shaw-4193 and Shaw-230 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents, same wife, two day difference on birthdate
