Note N02897 In Army Air Force, stationed in Tuscon. Was in gunnery training in Munro, CA. Killed in a training exercise - his plane went down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California, near Santa Barbara. No remains of the crew was ever found.

Richmonder, 6 Others Lost As Patrol Bomber Crashes
EUREKA, CALIF., (AP) - A twin-engine army bomber, on patrol duty off the Northern California coast, crashed unexpectedly into the southwestern tip of Humboldt Bay yesterday and sank, without leaving trace of its seven occupants.
Navy headquarters at San Francisco said the crewmwmbers were:
Army Lieutenant W.D. Frohlingsdorf, Virginia, Minn., pilot; Ensign A. C. Maher, Naval Reserve, new Orleans, co-pilot; J. E. Jones, Seaman second class, radioman, Whitney, Nev.; Sergeant W. J. Cassie, Chelsea, Mass.; Sergeant W. E. Andrews, Putnam, Texas; Sergeant L. H. Christian, Shawnee, Okla.; Corporal S. E. Shaw, 2400 blobk Park Ave., Richmond, Va. a gunner.
The bomber, flying under navy supervision, was seen to fall into the water by the captain of a tanker. He reported to the Coast Guard, which immediately sent boats to the scene. They found particles of wreckage identified as pieces of the bomber.

Corporal Shaw is the son of James William Shaw, of 2400 Park Ave. He transferred to the Air Corps from Ft. Meade where he was stationed with the National Guard, and was sent to Hamilton Field, Calif., in February 1941. He has served in Tuscon, Ariz., in Texas, and most recently has been on duty in California., where he was an instructor in aerial gunnery.
He is 23 years old and studied in public schools here before joining the armed forces.
