Biography

Scottish flag
James Shaw was born in Scotland.

James Shaw was born about 1775.

Baptism date might be 19 Jan 1745.

Between July 1785 (birth of Marion) and April 1787 (birth of Kathrine) the family or at James's wife Mary, travelled to Muirkirk from Kells, Kirkudbrightshire.

Then she travelled back to Minnigaff (near Newton Stewart) for her next child John's birth in October 1788!

It was 7 years before she had their next child William (or rather who survived) at Burnside, Muirkirk in 1795. Her last 5 children were born here also.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Would PMs please review the biography of this profile? There have been numerous merges and the biography has conflicting information. I have added Research Notes with 2 christening sources that match the birth date and location in the top of the profile with father stated as David, as well as a christening source for a child James, born to James Shaw and Mary McKie, so it is probably for this profile, but the child was born before their stated marriage date.

The biography states that James was born 1775 (possibly typo, since that would be a birth after both parents died). Baptism date is similar, but does not match the sources added to Research Notes.

There is a statement about travel, but it is not clear since it has 'or at James's wife Mary'

Hi Joanne.

We need to see if you will remove the parents that you have listed on James Shaw profile file so it can be corrected, I can then merge the two of our files. I've requested a merge from Owen on the other file here on wikitree and that will be another step to clearing this up. The parents of James Shaw we have researched are David Shaw and Sarah Brown. (Broun) in records. Dr Murdoch appears to agree with that and shows same on his ancestry research. I can help you with this at anytime but I'm not on your trusted list. Can you add me? Thanks so much, Cheers again from Linda

Hi Linda

I feel like I need to apologize given your reply, I'm very new at this but am very keen to go back as far as I can for my dad, he is 85. I am happy for you to amend anything in my tree that you feel is no based on evidence. I had no idea Ayreshire Roots was not a reliable site.

thanks Jo

Jo, your father and my aunt are about the same age, they would be fourth cousins if our trees have connected. My aunt (fourth generation Canadian Shaw) has a cluster of Australian matches we can't explain. My aunt is on Gedmatch, if your father is, or could be, that would be a pretty good proof the trees have connected. They are now connected due to the merge of Mary McKie - but of course, it now shows she married three different James Shaws. Two of them have different parents and one has none recorded so there is still some clean up to do.

Hi again Joanne,

Ayrshireroots is a great site for Scottish researchers with an overload of info on history of the County of Ayr. Many years of work has been compiled to help others. The site genealogy is individually family submitted so it can be a good site to find others who are researching your family, similar to ancestry.com but more individual research is needed for confirmation. I’ve submitted much of my own family research to ayrshireroots so I I’m simply saying, always be cautious and find media or documents to support your findings. Stay well and safe Joanne. You have a wonderful family history to discover.
