John was born in Greenock, the son of William shaw a teacher. [1] His father was entered as a teacher in the christening record.
In 1819 he married Agnes Goldie in Greenock. On the marriage record to both Agnes and Jean his second wife he is recorded as a cooper.[2]
It may be coincidental however his son John , married the owner of a Cooperage beside where he lived in central Greenock, according to the will of his sons' father in law[3]
By 1835 Agnes had died. His daughter by her are not mentioned in the 1841 census . I would assume that she died at the time of her mother.
John married a Jean hunter. He and Jean had two children by 1835. A daughter Christian, and son John Ritchie.
By 1838 he had left his wife and was with his sister in law Margaret Hunter. [4] He is mentioned as living in Irvine, Ayrshire. By 1847 he appears to back in Greenock and supervisor of the Steam boat quay. [5]
