Innis or Innes was born in 1894. He was the son of William Shaw and Isabella Martin.
At the time of World War I, his military file shows his civilian occupation as Dairy factory worker, and his father living in Auckland, and his mother living in Hamilton.
There is a picture of him in uniform in the Auckland Star, Volume XLVI, Issue 234, 1 October 1915, Page 8. His WW1 service number was 9/992. A handwritten note by him concerning his military service states: "Enlisted November 1914, joined Auckland Mounted Rifles, transferred to Otago Mounted Rifles, then transferred to NZ Artillery. Served on Gallipoli, wounded on Gallipoli, sent to England and then back to Egypt. Then back to France, served there till the Armistice, then served in the Army of Occupation in Germany. Returned to NZ in 1919."
Following the war he became a mechanic and eventually the proprietor of a garage in Hamilton.George married Ivy Irene Stevens in 1921 [1] and they had three children. Unfortunately he had some financial reverses and declared bankruptcy in 1938. He then became a storeman and clerk.
He re-enlisted to serve (Service number 34919), with the Regular Forces between 1951 and 1958 and was discharged in 1958. He held the rank of Corporal when he was due to be discharged in 1957 but then was re-engaged on a month to month basis as a Private. At the time his army career was coming to an end his eyesight had been causing him some difficulty and he had been working in the Transport division as a mechanic. His period of engagement had been extended several times since 1951, and his pending departure in 1957 left a gap that was hard to fill. So he was re-engaged on a month to month basis until a replacement could be found. He was about 63 or 64 when he left the Army.
He passed away in 1965 age 71 [2] He and Ivy had been living at 44 Bollard Avenue, Mt Albert. He was cremated at Purewa Cemetery on the last day of that year, with his ashes being scattered.
