James was the eldest son of Sir john Shaw and Jean Cunningham[1][2] born after Jul 1573.[3]

Research Notes

  • He was underage at his father's death in Jul 1594 placing his birth after Jul 1573. He married before 15 Mar 1595 placing his birth before 15 Mar 1581. His bith then, was circa 1577 +/- four years.
  • There is no record of him ever migrating to Ireland. He had a cousin Robert with a son called James who did travel with the Mongomeries to Ireland about 1610. The montgomery Papers citing him as the ancestors of the irish shaws have mis- cited records confusing the two generations.

The troubled conscience He did have a strong sense of family as his will cites. . "..in his contract of marriage to Margaret Montgomery daughter to 'Hew' Montgomery of Hesilhead, his present wife, there is no provision for heir male or female anent succession to his living, 'which may turn to dishonour 'of his house; therefore 'for discharging ' of his conscience , he binds him self and his his heirs -female whom son ever to infeft (sic) heritabily , immediately after his decease , his nearest and lawful heirs male whomsoever in lands of greenock , Fynnart, spangok (spango a farm west of Greenock) and others in the sheriffdom of Renfrewor else where in the kingdom. He also provides that the said heir-male shall after succession and inheriftment, pay to the heirs- female as follows:- If one daughter only , the sum of 10,000 merks ; if two 6,000 to the eldest and youngest 4,000 merks; if three, to the eldest 5,000 merks, and each of the other tow 2,500 merks; if more than three , to the eldest 4,000, then to each of the other two 2,000 merks." [5] They has issue:

  1. John[6]

He passed away in 1620. [2][7]
