Biography

A previous version of this profile had her attached as a daughter of Powhatan, but she was actually one of his wives as documented in the 1600s by William Strachey. Nothing is known of her except her name. She was probably born about 1575 and died in the early 1600's.

While visiting Jamestown in the early 1600s, writer William Strachey asked about the wives of Powhatan, then wrote them down in the following order, using his own spelling:[1]

  • Winganuske
  • Ashetoiske
  • Amopotoiske
  • Ottopomtacke
  • Attosomiske
  • Ponnoiske
  • Appomosiscut
  • Appimmoiske
  • Ortoughnoiske
  • Oweroughwough
  • Ottermiske
  • Memeoughquiske

This appears to be a duplicate of one of Powhatan’s wives. None of them had English names.

Pattanochus-1 and UNKNOWN-17319 appear to represent the same person because: This appears tobe a duplicate of Powhatan’s wife. Her tribe prior to her marriage is unknown.
