Biography

Samuel Sheaf, son of Edward, was born in about 1812 in Southwark, Surrey.

He first appears in the records in 1828 at the age of about 16 when he was indicted for stealing, on the 17th of October , 1 watch, value 1l. 15s.; 2 seals, value 10s., and 1 key, value 4s. , the goods of George Ince, an umbrella maker. He and his co-accused, John Cantlon, were found not guilty. The court records give Samuel's age as 16 and describe him as having no tattoos! He was recorded as being a "turner". [1]

On 8 Jan 1835 he married Martha Blandford at Horsleydown, Surrey. [2]

At the time of the daughter Louisa's baptism at Horsleydown in 1836, Samuel is described as a woodturner. [3]

In the 1851 census, he is recorded living in the Stringers Building, St George, Surrey with his wife Martha and children Samuel and Louisa.[4]

Samuel died in the third quarter of 1866. His death was registered in the St Saviour Southwark District. [5]
