The Shearer family lived in Egremont, Grey County, Canada West during the 1851 Census of Canada. They included Alex (age 41, farmer) and Elizabeth (age 30) along with their children Mary (age 11), Adam (age 7), Elizabeth (age 6), Susanna (age 3), and Margrett (age 2).[1]
The family was still in Egremont during the 1861 Census of Canada. The household included parents Alexander (age 47, farmer) and Elizabeth (age 39) plus their children Elizabeth (age 15), Adam (age 17, labourer), Susanna (age 12), Margrett (age 10, student), Jeannett (age 8, student), James (age 6, student), Anny (age 4), and Alexander (age 2). They lived in a one-story, one-family log home.[2]
On November 20, 1867, Adam married Elizabeth Amelia Beatty Smith in Wellington, Ontario. Both were residents of Mount Forest.[3]
Their daughter Elizabeth was born on December 22, 1869. Her birth registration does not name her birth mother. Adam Shearer, the informant of her birth, is listed on the record but not described as her birth father.[4] All records show she was raised as part of the Adam and Elizabeth Shearer family.
The Shearer family lived in Egremont, Ontario during the 1871 Census of Canada. The household included Adam (age 26, farmer), Elizabeth (age 23), Thomas (age 3), and Elizabeth (age 1). The family is listed as Presbyterian.[5]
The Shearers lived in the town of Georgina just south of Lake Simcoe in the York North District of Ontario at the time of the 1881 Census of Canada. The family included Adam (age 36, labourer), Elizabeth (age 33), Thomas (age 13, student), Elizabeth (age 11, student), Margaret (age 9, student), Adam (age 8, student), George (age 6, student), Ellen (age 4), and Georgina (age 2). They are listed as Canadian Methodists and ethnically Scotch.[6]
The 1891 Census of Canada found the Shearer family in Brock, Ontario. Within the household were Adam (age 45, labourer) and Eliza (age 43) plus their children Thomas (age 22, miller), Eliza (age 21), Margaret (age 19), Adam (age 17, labourer), George (age 15, labourer), Nellie (age 14), Georgina (age 12), and Albert (age 5).[7]
