James was born on 15 Nov 1769 to Isaac Sheffield and Freelove Pendleton of Stonington, New London, Connecticut. ^[1]

James Sheffield married Judith Pendleton, the daughter of Captain William Pendleton and Lydia Palmer, 1792. ^[1]

James Sheffield and Judith Pendleton had the following children all born in Stonington, Connecticut: ^[2]

James Sheffield died on 4 Oct 1798 at the age of 28 and was buried in the Robinson Burying Ground, Stonington, Connecticut. ^{[3] [4]}

James' wife Judith Pendleton died four months later on 28 Feb 1799 in Stonington, Connecticut and also was buried in Robinson Burying Ground. ^[5] Five months later, guardianship of James and Judith's children James, Lyddia, and Maria was granted to James' brother Captain William Sheffield by the Probate Court of Stonington, Connecticut on 26 Jul 1799. ^[6]

James and his children were included in his father Isaac Sheffield's will on 15 Mar 1799 in Stonington, Connecticut. ^[2]

On 25 Mar 1801 the probate of James Sheffield's Estate was complete. ^[6]
