Research Notes

Needs Location Research: Removed "Washington" from birth location and "Lee" from death location - pre-1776 Virginia did not have a Washington or a Lee county. Children were born in Maryland - entry for Ezekiel above says he was born near Hagerstown. Hagerstown is in Washington County, Maryland.

Notations on Vincent Hobbs/Mary Hannah Shelby:

“ 338. Vincent HOBBS Sr.89 was born about 1720 in Dorchester, England.89 He immigrated in 1735 to Port of Dover, DE.89 He married Mary Hannah SHELBY who is referred to as "Hannah" on most legal documents. She is believed to have been a niece of Evan SHELBY, Sr., who died in Maryland before the rest of the SHELBY family moved to Southwest Virginia. Vincent HOBBS remained in Maryland until about 1769 when he and his son-in-law, John BENHAM, went to Holston region of Southwest Virginia. John BENHAM built a fort there. BENHAM made a settlement in Turkey Cove in Lee County about 1780, but Abingdon people claim he and his wife are buried in an marked grave near Abingdon. Vincent HOBBS was born about 1720 and died after 1808. The last known record for Vincent and wife appeared in a Court of Quarters Sessions hearing for Lee County on the 26 day of May 1808. It ordered that the overseers of the poor receive Vincent HOBBS and his wife on their list and provide for them according to the law. It is not known exactly when or where they died. They are believed to have been buried along the Powell River, two miles below DeBusk Mill near Dryden, Virginia. Vincent HOBBS married about 1742 in Maryland. When his son, Job, applied for his war pension in Arkansas, he stated his father was Vincent and his mother Ruth (nee THOMAS) HOBBS. Therefore, Vincent must have had two marriages. An idea for her parents: All we have right now is a note that she was "a niece of Evan Shelby." Since her maiden name is Shelby, she would almost certainly be the daughter of one of his brothers. Since all of them have bare bones profiles, without marriages or children, we could create and "Unknown Son Shelby" and attach her as his daughter. Then she is still connected to the right family, but not to the wrong parents, as she is now. If ever sources come to light which name her parents, the profile for Phillip Shelby's unknown son can be merged into whichever one he turns out to be.

There is no source for her parents, and the RootsWeb excerpt explicitly states "She is believed to have been a niece of Evan SHELBY, Sr.," NOT his daughter. So I've marked them uncertain. and recommend disconnection.

There is also no primary source evidence for her alleged middle name. This family seems to be very fond of finding different names in records and assuming it was a middle name, at a time when middle names were extraordinarily rare. It seems more likely that Vincent had a third wife named Hannah in between Mary Shelby and Ruth Thomas. Multiple wives dying young from complications of childbirth was considerably less rare. But that is just a theory I'm rolling around.

Did Evan Sr and Catherine really name two daughters Mary? Mary Hannah and Mary Alexander (Shelby - 184) or is this really messed up?

Shelby-7 and Shelby-377 are not ready to be merged because: I’m not certain these are the same due to the larger numbered profile having a child not listed in the sources of the lower numbered profile. I will research tomorrow.

Shelby-7 and Shelby-377 appear to represent the same person because: Same except death year. Lee is in Washington County.
