NOTE: The DAR no longer accepts this Daniel as a Patriot Ancestor. New proof needs to be established.***
Daniel served in the Revolutionary War. The Record of service of Connecticut men shows that a Daniel Sheldon was a surgeon's mate in Col. Hinman's Fourth Regiment, 1775. The service for a Daniel Sheldon is also shown, in an sourced profile, as: "Sheldon, Daniel, Lynn. Private, Capt. Enoch Putnam's co., Col. John Mansfield's regt.; muster roll dated Aug. 1, 1775; enlisted May 18, 1775; service, 2 mos. 19 days; also, Capt. Putnam's co., 19th regt. commanded by Lieut. Col. Israel Hutchinson; order for money in lieu of bounty coat dated Camp at Winter Hill, Dec. 26, 1775." (The Daughters of the American Revolution no longer accepts previously submitted service and no service is shown in the DAR's online Genealogical Research System, so it is not known whether either record of service is correct. As there was another Daniel Sheldon who served in Connecticut and who later became a surgeon, I question whether the service as a surgeon's mate belongs to the Daniel in this profile.Watt-266 19:10, 31 March 2014 (EDT))
Note: See further analysis below
Although the DAR shows that Daniel died at Rupert, Bennington, Vermont, other sources show that he died in Suffield, Connecticut. This further shows that there are several Daniel's who have been mixed up.Watt-266 20:01, 31 March 2014 (EDT)
Wikipedia:Suffield, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, CT. It was incorporated in 1674 in Massachusetts and annexed in 1749 by Connecticut.
Wikipedia:Hartford, Connecticut was named in 1637 and incorporated 1784.
Wikipedia:Hartford County, Connecticut was founded in 1668.
Hartford, when referred to, does not always distinguish if it the Town in Hartford County or if referring to Hartford County.
Daniel Sheldon b. 1715 has been conflated with Daniel Sheldon born 1750. The Revolutionary War Service of Daniel Sheldon b. 1715 has been called into question by the Daughters of the American Revolution. With good cause. The service was, in part, stated as being a Surgeon's Mate. However, there is nothing to indicate that Daniel, b. 1715 ever had such training. Additionally, having been born in 1715, he would have been 60 years old in 1775.
But when we examine, Daniel Sheldon b. 1750, we see that he was a Doctor and he would have been 25 in 1775 and thus is most likely the Daniel who served as a Surgeon's Mate in the Revolutionary War. Additionally, there is a Dr. Sheldon mentioned in the pension file of David Judson. David Judson is the brother of Charlotte Judson, Daniel's wife. See Daniel Sheldon for more detail.
1. Daniel Sheldon b. 1715 Northampton, MA, son of Capt. Jonathan Sheldon and Mary Southwell. Moves to Suffield??. Dies 1798 in Suffield.
2. Daniel Sheldon b. 1738 d. 1739, Son of Daniel b. 1715.
3. Daniel "Dan" Sheldon b. 1765, Suffield, CT d. ??? Son of John Sheldon and Susannah King.
4. Daniel Sheldon b. 1726 Hartford, CT. d. 1772. Son of Issac Sheldon
5. Daniel Sheldon b. 1750 Hartford, Hartford, CT. d. 1840. Son of Daniel b. 1726
There is a Daniel Sheldon who served in the Hartford Guard in 1778. But is he Daniel Sheldon (1) b. 1715 who lived in Suffield, Hartford, CT. or Daniel Sheldon Daniel Sheldon (5) b. 1750 from Hartford, Hartford, CT? Or perhaps we missed yet another Daniel Sheldon?
Possible source of Patriotic Service in the Hartford Guard Rolls and Lists of Connecticut Men in the Revolution, 1775-1783 By Connecticut Historical Society,p.187.
Thus, the only Daniel left in Hartford, CT to serve in the Hartford Guard was Daniel (1) b. 1715. At 63 years of age in 1778, it makes sense as the Hartford Guard was a Guard unit kept for protection at home.
The following service information of Sergeon's Mate needs vetted and likely belongs to Daniel Sheldon b. 1750 of Litchfield
