Possible Military Service

Possible Service in French and Indian War

Revolutionary War Service

NOTE: The DAR no longer accepts this Daniel as a Patriot Ancestor. New proof needs to be established.***

NOTE: A Librarian/Genealogist at the New England Historic Genealogical Society with extensive DAR experience examined the attributed service and determined that neither the service as a Private nor as Surgeon's Mate were appropriate for this Daniel Sheldon. Thus no Revolutionary War service can be attributed to him at this time.

Note: See further analysis below

The Intentions for the marriage of Daniel Sheldon and Mary Harmon were published on September 15, 1737, and the marriage took place on September 30, 1737, at Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut.[3][4]

Died in Suffield, CT.

Sorting out Daniel Sheldons

Town Confusion

Wikipedia:Suffield, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, CT. It was incorporated in 1674 in Massachusetts and annexed in 1749 by Connecticut.

Wikipedia:Hartford, Connecticut was named in 1637 and incorporated 1784.

Wikipedia:Hartford County, Connecticut was founded in 1668.

Hartford, when referred to, does not always distinguish if it the Town in Hartford County or if referring to Hartford County.

Confusion among Daniels

Daniel Sheldon b. 1715 has been conflated with Daniel Sheldon born 1750. The Revolutionary War Service of Daniel Sheldon b. 1715 has been called into question by the Daughters of the American Revolution. With good cause. The service was, in part, stated as being a Surgeon's Mate. However, there is nothing to indicate that Daniel, b. 1715 ever had such training. Additionally, having been born in 1715, he would have been 60 years old in 1775.

But when we examine, Daniel Sheldon b. 1750, we see that he was a Doctor and he would have been 25 in 1775 and thus is most likely the Daniel who served as a Surgeon's Mate in the Revolutionary War. Additionally, there is a Dr. Sheldon mentioned in the pension file of David Judson. David Judson is the brother of Charlotte Judson, Daniel's wife. See Daniel Sheldon for more detail.

Sheldons of Northampton, MA and Suffield, Hartford, CT.

1. Daniel Sheldon b. 1715 Northampton, MA, son of Capt. Jonathan Sheldon and Mary Southwell. Moves to Suffield??. Dies 1798 in Suffield.

2. Daniel Sheldon b. 1738 d. 1739, Son of Daniel b. 1715.

3. Daniel "Dan" Sheldon b. 1765, Suffield, CT d. ??? Son of John Sheldon and Mary Rising.

Sheldons of Harford, CT

4. Daniel Sheldon b. 1726 Hartford, CT. d. 1772. Son of Issac Sheldon

5. Daniel Sheldon b. 1750 Hartford, Hartford, CT. d. 1840. Son of Daniel b. 1726

Analysis: Possible Revoluntary War Service of Daniel b. 1715

There is a Daniel Sheldon who served in the Hartford Guard in 1778. But is he Daniel Sheldon (1) b. 1715 who lived in Suffield, Hartford, CT. or Daniel Sheldon Daniel Sheldon (5) b. 1750 from Hartford, Hartford, CT? Or perhaps we missed yet another Daniel Sheldon?

Possible source of Patriotic Service in the Hartford Guard Rolls and Lists of Connecticut Men in the Revolution, 1775-1783 By Connecticut Historical Society,p.187.

  • Daniel (1) b. 1715 would be 63 years old.
  • Daniel (2) was dead, having died as a baby.
  • Daniel (3) was 13, a remote possibility.
  • Daniel (4) died in 1772
  • Daniel (5) married Charlotte Judson in 1777 in Woodbury, Litchfield, Ct. He had moved to Litchfield County prior to 1777 to establish his medical practice.

Thus, the only Daniel left in Hartford, CT to serve in the Hartford Guard was Daniel (1) b. 1715. At 63 years of age in 1778, this seem unlikely. Further research is needed to determine if yet another Daniel Sheldon exists. Understanding the role of the Hartford Guard may shed light.
