Biography

Caryle Eugene Sheldon was born on 8 June 1918[1][2][3][4] at Mason City, Cerro Gordo, Iowa, or at Iowa Falls, Iowa,[2] the son of Leo Sheldon and Lulu King.[5]

In 1930, Caryle Sheldon lived in a place his father rented in Trygg Township, Burleigh, North Dakota, with his parents, Leo O. and Lulu E. Sheldon and one brother. Leo worked as a farm laborer.[6]

Caryle apparently got into a bit of trouble when he was young. He was arrested on 26 June 1939 at Kings Roadhouse in Clear Lake, Iowa, for bootlegging. He pleaded guilty to the charge on Tuesday, 7 Nov 1939, and received a sentence of 3 months in county jail and a $300 fine. He was paroled to J.D. Barlow, county probation officer. He was working for his uncle at the time. Officers found marked money, which had been used to purchase liquor, on Caryle.[7]

In 1940, Caryle E. Sheldon was living at the Eureka Hotel in Mason City, where he had lived since at least 1935. He worked as a waiter in a restaurant and a night clerk.[8]

Amy Lou Cary[5] and Caryle Sheldon were married in early July, 1941. At the time of the announcement, he was "of" Camp Claiborne, Louisiana.[9] Amy was the daughter of Royal Witter Cary and Erma May Paulson. (After Caryle's death, Amy married Arnold G. “Arnie” Holstad.)[1] Amy and Caryle had at least the following children:[10]

When he registered for the World War 2 Draft on 16 Oct 1940 at Mason City, Caryle Eugene Sheldon lived at the Eureka Hotel in Mason City. He said that Stanley King, a cousin who also lived at the Eureka, would always know his address. Caryle was 5' 10-1/2" tall and weighed 222 lbs. He had blue eyes, blond hair and a light complexion.[3]

Caryle E. Sheldon enlisted in the US Army, National Guard as a Private, Serial Number 20702450, on 10 Feb 1941 at Mason City. He said he was born in 1918 in Iowa. He is shown as having completed 3 years of high school. His civilian occupation was clerical, general office. He was single, without dependents.[11] He was shipped overseas with the US Army on 15 Jan 1942.[2]

Caryle was reported missing in action on 17 Feb 1943 from North Africa. He was a sergeant's technician/tech. sergeant. He suffered a leg wound during the African landing in November 1942 and was awarded a Purple Heart decoration. At the time of the report, his wife was living with her parents in Clear Lake, Iowa, and his parents, formerly of Wilton, North Dakota, were living in Oregon.[12] He was held as a prisoner of war at Stalag 3B, Furstenberg, Brandenburg, Prussia (Also KDOS [USA] #1-5; ARB BTNS 225-255) 52-14.[13] It was reported in the Mason City Globe Gazette on 17 May 1945 that he was held as a prisoner of war in Italy and later at Stalag B-2. He had been released and was on his way home.[14] He returned to the United States on 23 May 1945[2] and left military service on 9 Aug 1945.[15][2] During his service, he served at: Camp Claiborne, Louisiana; Hdqtrs. Co. 133, 34th Div.; and Hdqtrs. Co. 168th Inf.,[2] and he served in the North African Theatre: Tunisia.[16]

Caryle filled out a second Selective Service Registration Card on 13 Aug 1945 after his release from the Army, He said he was 5' 11-1/2" tall and weighed 209 lbs. The person who would always know his address was Mrs. Royal W. Cary of 207 Orchard in Clear Lake, Cerro Gordo, Iowa, which was also his current address. He was unemployed.[3]

Caryle died on 24 Sept 1975 at 57 years of age[5] at Eldora, Hardin, Iowa, (or at Mason City?[5]) and is buried at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Memorial 2, Lot 103, Sp 5, Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa.[1][4]
