Biography

From Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia:
John Shelley was born in 1456 and married Elizabeth Michelgrove (b. 1460) in 1474. He passed away Jan 3, 1526.
Elizabeth Shelley (Michelgrove) was born March 29, 1460 in Clapham, Sussex , England. She died July 3, 1514, in Clapham, Sussex, England
Daughter of John Michelgrove, Esq. and Mary Michelgrove
Wife of John Shelley, MP
Mother of Edward Shelley; John Shelley; Jane Bellingham; Elizabeth Shelley; Sir :William Shelley, MP and 4 others.
Death Date:3 Jan 1527
Cemetery: Church of Saint Mary the Virgin
Burial or Cremation Place: Clapham, Arun District, West Sussex, England.
Sir William Shelley, John's son, succeeded in 1527."
A house at Michelgrove was mentioned in 1279, 1302, and 1364, (fn. 12) and at the time of her marriage in 1474 Elizabeth Michelgrove was seised of a capital messuage, two granaries, a dovecot, and two gardens there. In 1534 the house was rebuilt by Sir William Shelley who is said to have entertained Henry VIII in it. The Tudor building was quadrangular, with an open internal courtyard and polygonal towers at the outer angles. It was of brick, and the south or entrance facade had a three-bay Doric or Tuscan arcade, apparently of stone, with an achievement above. The entrance hall may have been incorporated from the previous building. Upstairs was a gallery 78 feet long.

Will

John Shelley's will is dated 1 May 1526. It names his son William as his principal heir and executor and puts him in charge of the funerary arrangements. Bequests to churches mention those of Clapham and Patching. £50 is given to his son Edward. The will was proved on 30 January 1526/7.[1]

Research Notes

John's wife Elizabeth was daughter of John Michelgrove alias Fauconer of Michelgrove. [2]

John Shelley is listed in the Visitations of Sussex as the son of Gilbert Shelley and a daughter of Sydney, husband of Elizebeth Michellgrove [sic] and the father of Sir William, Richard, Edward and Sir John.[3]

John Shelley held Michelgrove manor, Sussex, and was an armiger. John Falconer died later in 1459, and John's daughter Elizabeth (b. 1460), who married John Shelley in 1474, brought the Michelgrove family estates to the Shelley family, with which they were to remain for three centuries.[4]

John Shelley is 6 Degrees from Francis Bacon: 2 branches (3-4) [1]

This is the notable MP and philosopher. I would have put this under Research notes but I am not pre 1500 certified.

Thank you for your comment. I am happy to add anything you wish regarding John Shelley but not the 6 degrees between himself and Francis Bacon as I think it should be bloodline only and this link is via marriage.

Kind regards, Carole

I recommend that the profile managers of Shelley-1840 (this profile) and of Shelley-113 go examine the work done by Paul Mackenzie at [FamllySearch https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/G8PX-CN4] on this family. I'm posting this message on both profiles. Paul has researched this family intensely and recommends the following scholarly book that addresses their lineage and lives: The Merchant Class of Medieval London: 1300-1500

by Sylvia L. Thrupp. Paul has left primary source records for John Shelley, died 12 Nov 1486. I think these profiles should be merged, but it should be decided by people who are descendants or have some other interest. I'm also posting this on the profile I took over when it was orphaned, and finally started to work on corrections. I wish a work group would form with interest in this fascinating and valuable merchant class in late Medieval London, who, like the successful Shelley family, achieved membership in the gentility, and associations with high court officials. There's so many primary source records and Paul has made it easy to find them, by coordinating with Family Search. I have found several of my original works here on WikiTree copied there -- shouldn't we take advantage when we can return the favor? {smile}

Shelley-1840 and Shelley-113 appear to represent the same person because: I see no reason these profiles should not be merged. Died on same day

Shelley-1840 and Shelley-113 are not ready to be merged because: No parents or children to confirm the match
Shelley-1840 and Shelley-113 appear to represent the same person because: Same date of death and both appear to be M.P.

Shelley-1671 and Shelley-113 appear to represent the same person because: Proposing this merge again as Elizabeth Michelgrove and Elizabeth Falconer are same person. Check HOP for William Shelley for clarification.

Shelley-1671 and Shelley-113 do not represent the same person because: Sorry but I cannot see enough matching facts which would prove these two people are the same person.

I removed Bridget Shelley Chauncey as she is 100 years off and placed in wrong Shelley family.

Here is the database errors for this profile after the merge:

Warning: Check the data. A child's birth date should not be before a parent is six years old.

A father's death date should not be more than nine months before one of his children's birth dates.

A father's birth date should not be more than 100 years before the birth date of one of his children.

A parent should not have been born more than 170 years before one of their children died. This would mean that even if the parent gave birth at 70, the child lived to be over 100.

A parent's death date should not be more than 120 years before one of their children died. This would mean the child lived to be over 120

Someone may want to clean up that Find A Grave source. I merged them but the children are at incorrect ages now and needs to be corrected or removed with sources. I will check on this later but I am not familiar with this line.

Sorry not my mistake. I adopted this profile and can't correct it until I can get my pre 1500 badge. I have to have wait until one month after my account is confirmed on 26 Feb. So hopefully by the end of the month,
Shelley-113 and Shelley-389 appear to represent the same person because: These two profiles are the same, 389 has the accurate dates

Hi, There are inconsistent dates in this profile. It says that he married before he was born.
