William Shelton Jr. born 1803 in South Carolina m. Rachel Bolling
Ellis Shelton born 1805 in South Carolina m. Millie Bolling
Joel Shelton born 1807 in South Carolina m. Mary Chastain
Sarah Shelton born 1810 in South Carolina m. Edward Chastain
He married Lydia Parker about 1817 but some researchers say his first wife did not pass until 1829. If this is the case then some of the children attributed to William and Lydia actually belong to William and Mary.
In the 1850 census, he and Lydia are living in Haywood Co., NC, with five sons.
In 1860 William was deceased and L. Shelton, age 65, was living in the home of S.P.C. Shelton & wife, R., in Jackson Co., NC. They had children: Sarah E., Lydie J., and William H.
(Note: Jackson Co. was created from Haywood Co.) [1]
He passed away about 1851 in Jackson County, North Carolina. [2] William was laid to rest in Rock Bridge Cemetery, Tuckasegee, Jackson County, North Carolina, United States. [3]
His estate was probated 1852 Haywood County, North Carolina. [4]
DNA
This William is of no relation to the Sheltons of Virginia. So far, we have not been able to trace his parents, but DNA from several descendants has proven that he was not related to any of the Sheltons of Shelton Laurel although they lived in the same areas and descendants knew one another.
DNA tests show that this William Shelton, father of Ellis, is connected with an older William Shelton who md. Hannah Yates, known as the Dan River, VA, line. But, it does not appear to be father to son. William and Ellis are proven DNA related. There were many Shelton lines in the south.
There is a deed grant in NC #107--Edward Chastain to William Shelton, assignee of Edward Chastain, land from the Cherokee Indian Treaty--$162.00. Possibly born 8 Aug 1781 and possibly died 1857.
Research Notes
William and Ellis are side by side in the 1840 census for Haywood Co., NC.
William is also in the 1830 census for Haywood Co.

Please look a little closer at the Unsourced FindAGrave Memorial you linked to this profile. William V. Shelton that married Mary Hatcher was born in 1809 and is purported to be the Brother of Samuel Martin Shelton, NOT his Father.
Upon further study, the FindAGrave Memorial is just a jumbled mess. Samuel M. Shelton was actually the son of William V Shelton b. 1809. The only elder William Shelton I can find was listed in the 1850 Census and married to "Liddie". Although there appears to be some connection between these families based on common names, I see no indication that he was the father of William b. 1809.
Shelton-2331 and Shelton-2332 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same people as noted by the dates. I can add a spouse and children once the merge occurs.
