Biography

William Shelton was born 26 July 1805. He died 30 May 1874. He was the son of Williamson and Sallie Francis Shelton. His mother died giving birth to him.

In 1850, the US Census gives us a look at William's home life. We see William now age 50 and his wife Nancy is 41. Gabriel was 18; James, 16; Mariah, 13; and Mary, 3. [1]

William Shelton married Nancy Deatherage, daughter of Achilles Deatherage and his wife, Hannah Sparger on 28 Feb 1829 [2]

Children of William and Nancy:

  1. Gabriel Shelton
  2. James F Shelton
  3. Mariah Shelton
  4. Mary Shelton

The above is from the correct 1850 US Census record for Stokes County, Snow Creek, North Carolina where this particular William and Nancy Shelton lived. What is written below [which should be notated in citation form] is for a William and Nancy Shelton living in Holly Springs, Surrey, North Carolina. There is crossing of family information which is going to ruin someone's genealogy unless corrected. [3]

Unlike the William below, our William was a farmer. Our William was 50 years of age and his Nancy was 41. The Surrey William and Nancy were 45 and 36 respectively.

The son shown as William Basdil Shelton is not a child of this William and must be transferred to the correct mother and father.

    • This is the Probate for the Surrey County William Shelton. I read it over and some of his son's names were in it. The death date for my great-grandfather is wrong here and on Ancestry. I have been trying to find his correct date of death on Family Search.

William J Shelton was my 3rd great-grandfather and as I was adding him to my tree, your link and one other flagged up. I have looked at your William and the other William and will be setting the other William ["https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Shelton-4501"] as the father to Gabriel Shelton in my tree. In the interest of keeping the tree intact, perhaps you would like to merge to it as well? It's so rare I find anyone in my mother's line with any common ancestors so happy "meeting" you :)
