Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Stephen Shelton was a Virginia colonist.

Stephen was born about 1760 in Virginia Colony. He apparently passed away before 1830 in Giles County, Tennessee. He is last found on the 1820 census in Pulaski, Giles County, Tennessee.[1]

Stephen married Rhoda Green before 1784.[citation needed]

The family may have been in Greenville, South Carolina in 1800. There is a Stephen Shelton, age 16-25 (b 1775-1804), with wife, and 2 males and 2 females under age 10.[2] There is also a Stephen Shelton in Fayette County, Kentucky on the 1800 Tax List.[3] Not sure if either one is this Stephen Shelton.

A Stephen Shelton is on the 1810 Tax List in Grainger County, Tennessee.[4] It will take more research to determine which, if any, of the 1800 and 1810 records apply to this Stephen Shelton. The most likely ones are 1800 in Kentucky and 1810 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Several other Sheltons and related Luttrells were in Kentucky in 1800 before they moved on to Tennessee.

Stephen (age 45+, b before 1775) is listed on the 1820 Federal census in Pulaski, Giles County, Tennessee. With him are his wife, also age 45+, 1 male and 2 females age 10-15, and 1 male age 16-25.[5]

Neither Stephen nor Rhoda Shelton has been found on the 1830 federal census, although their apparent son, Allen D. Shelton, is in Giles County, Tennessee in 1830.

By 1836 Rhoda is apparently a widow. She is listed with property in her name only on the Tennessee, Early Tax List Records, 1836, in Giles County, Tennessee (p 37). She has 67 acres valued at $536. Jesse Shelton and W. B. Shelton are listed on p 55 and Stephen Shelton with 40 acres is listed on p 56.[6] Jesse and Stephen could be her sons; not sure who W. B. Shelton might be.

Note

Note: Resided Grainger Co.,TN. 1801-1807.
Stephen W. SHELTON may have had 3 more children, although it's not been proven...1) Elizabeth SHELTON 2) Molly SHELTON, m-William HOLT, and 3) Jane SHELTON, m-Samuel RANDOLPH.
It has also been said that Stephen SHELTON was connected in some way to Crispin SHELTON of Virginia...but the connection is not currently known.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Stephen by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Stephen:

Could this record possibly apply to this Stephen Shelton? It shows a Stephen Shelton on the Militia Roll of Virginia's Revolutionary Army in 1782. Based on an approximate DOB of 1760, it would make him of approximately fighting age, and Virginia would be the proper place assuming the family had not left the state for TN yet. I am also working under an assumption they left for Tennessee to claim a Revolutionary Land Grant issued for fighting serving in the war.

I was working on my husband's file which is not yet on ancestry. I have his paper DNA, but don't know what help it is. Where do I start? My file with his line is on ancestry, and he keeps tying into profiles.

Shelton-2226 and Shelton-937 appear to represent the same person because: Although birth and death dates for Shelton-937 are not given, he was born about 1760 in Virginia. Both are married to same spouse, Rhoda Green.
Mark Shelton has been removed as a child of Stephen Shelton and added as a child of Hezekiah Shelton. See Mark Shelton's profile page for explanation and evidence for this change.
