Biography

Patricia Gayle Shelton was born 09 Sep 1937 in Dallas, Dallas, Texas, USA to Jesse Shelton and Irene Thompson.^[1][2] Gayle was the tenth child of 12 brothers & sisters (of which three died in infancy):

As remembered by her two younger brothers, her smile was infectious and her heart warm and loving. They also remember, that although she was the youngest daughter, she could "hold her own".

She quit school in the 6th grade, after a 2 year bout with Rheumatic Fever. Like many of her siblings, Gayle moved out of her struggling parent’s home at the age of 12 and lived with several of her older sisters. At the age of 15, while working at a local cinema in the Houston area, she met and married Raymond Dennis Clevenger.

After her divorce from Raymond, she settled in the DFW area and began working for Continental Trailways as a reservation operator. It was while working at Continental Trailways; she met Robert Ken Patterson, a co-worker. After several years of courtship, she finally said yes to one of his many marriage proposals. Ken and Gayle were married for 35 years. They enjoyed reading, scrabble, crossword puzzles, and crafts of all kinds. Her interest in writing took her back to school in her later years where she excelled in her English and Literature classes. Ken and Gayle even learned pottery making together. She enjoyed making keepsake items and holiday decorations by hand and giving them away to family members.

She resigned from Trailways in 1977 and became a housewife where she helped Ken with a Dallas Morning News commercial delivery route for many years. To boost her social security benefits, she returned to work in her later years, where both Ken and Gayle worked as security guards for the same company.

Gayle was an all around great cook and a good seamstress. She devoted most of her social time throughout her life to her family. Her resignation from Continental Trailways allowed her and Ken time to enjoy their continually growing family and the crafts they loved so much. Between them they had nine children, although none together. They shared the joy of 23 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

She had a strong belief in God and the spiritual world. Although a member of the Mormon Church, she did not believe in structured religion and did not regularly attend.

Like all the women in her immediate family, including her mother, she was diagnosed with the beginning stages of dementia in 2009. She suffered a bi-lateral brain stem stroke and passed away 3 Nov 2012 at the age of 75 in Weatherford, Texas.

Gayle married 1st: Raymond Dennis Clevenger (1934 - 2010) about 1953 in Houston, Haris, Texass, USA. They were divorced in 1966.^[3] Gayle & Raymound had 4 daughters, not listed as all are living.

She married 2nd: Kenneth Patterson (1924 - 2007), with whom I would play golf, on April 4, 1974.^[2] There were no children from this marriage but both had children by previous marriages.^[2]
