Rosa Shepard Doolittle is the mother of James Doolittle.
During his life he spoke of her as tough, and ready for anything. This is evident in the way she followed her husband to the frozen lands of Alaska.
James recalled one time when she had to lug water into the house from the frozen creek, as their was no indoor plumbing. He and his mother traveled four miles (on sled) to dig a hole in the ice, lower a five gallon can into the hole and fill it. One day she got an hurt on the sled, but she never complained. She got the water, rode the four miles home and took care of the water. After a time she saw the local doctor, who said she had two broken ribs. This incident earned her the nickname Spartan.
Rosa was born on 10 February 1869 in Alameda Ca. She was the daughter of Alexander Charles Shepard and Adelia (Fox) Shepard.
Rosa died at the age of 64 on 22 September 1930 in Los Angeles Ca.
