Biography

Thomas Shepard, III, was the son of parents Thomas Shepard, Jr. and Anna (Tyng) Shepard. He was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts and baptized on 3 Jul 1658.[1]

He married on 27 Jul 1682, Mary (Anderson) Lynde, widow of Thomas Lynde and daughter of John Anderson and his wife, Jane. Mary had married Mr. Lynde prior to 1677. They had a daughter, Mary, born in 1680. Thomas and Mary Shepard had two daughters, both named Anna. The first, born in Apr 1683, died in July, 1684. The second daughter was born on 30 Jan 1684-5. She would marry Maj. Henry Smith of St. George's Manor, Suffolk, New York, and move there.

Thomas died suddenly in Jun 1685 at the age of 26 years, 11 months. This source[1] says in one paragraph, that he died on 8 Jun 1685, and in the next, that he died on the 7th which, it is said, was a Sunday, This resulted in Mr. Nathaniel Gookin of Cambridge, and Mr. Cotton Mather needing to supply his pulpit the same day.

Thomas Shepard III, son of Thomas Shepard II and grandson of Thomas Shepard I, was born in Charlestown, Mass., in 1658. He received his early education from his father and graduated from Harvard in 1676. After the death of his father in 1677, the church in Charlestown called Shepard and Joseph Browne (16I6?—1678) to settle as colleagues. Browne refused and Shepard was eventually ordained as minister. His tenure there was cut short by his unexpected death in 1685. The papers of Thomas Shepard III contain six volumes of sermons, including a volume of “Sermons on Matthew” and a copy of a proclamation of a fast by the General Court of Connecticut
