Biography

Harriet "Hattie" Ann Shepherd was born on March 23, 1868, in Bovina, Wisconsin, her father, Henry, was 29, and her mother, Margaret, was 21. She married Amasa Alif Spaulding and they had six children together. She then married William Leonard Heagle and they had three children together. She died on September 15, 1942, in Wisconsin at the age of 74, and was buried in Shiocton, Wisconsin.[1]

Divorce

Divorce action by Hattie A Spaulding
Hattie A Spaulding filed for divorce on 1 Dec 1903 and was granted the divorce on 2 January 1904. As the Plaintiff, she stated that Alief treated her in a cruel and inhuman manner: he had repeatedly beaten and kicked her, threatened her and the children's lives, in his violent acts knocked over boiling water from the stove onto her, threw a satchel at her that cut her above the left eye that left a scar, and used abusive language toward her.
She stated that it was through her efforts and work that the family had aquired what little they pocessed and that Alief while an "able bodied man" lived a "shiftless life and permits his family to want for the necessaries of life". At the time of filing, Alief owned 5 acres of land with house, barn and outbuildings in the Town of Maine worth $350 and also another 14 acres of land worth $300 incumbered by a $100 mortgage. Hattie sought alimony for her and the children, custody of the children, and protection of the court from any further viloence by Alief, and stopping him from disposing of their property.
At the time of the granting of the divorce the ages of the children were: Gibson 16, Howard 13, Myrtle 10, and Mabel 7 years old. It appears that Hattie was granted title to the 5 acres homestead and furniture and court filing fee, granted custody of the children with her divorce but it was not clear that any alimony was granted. She was subsequently granted special permission to remarry within one year of her divorce on 11 August 1904.[2]
