Biography

Amy Rebecca Shepherd was the oldest in the family of Margaret Blackburn and Solomon Shepherd. Rebecca was her grandmothers name. Solomon's father and Margaret's father had both been born in northern Ireland. several entries from Menallen MM 11/10/1783 A certificate was granted “Solomon Shepherd his Wife ()Margaret) and 9 children, as they have settled west side of the Alleghenny (Mtns)”

Amy Rebecca Allen was complained of for marrying with the aid of a priest, to one not a member this occurred at the same Menallen MM at which the certificate had been given to Solomon Shepherd. “(Amy) Rebecca Allen, formerly Shepherd was visited but she would not acknowledge her error and was disowned. 11/10/83”

John and Amy Rebecca married about 1782 in PA, immediately residing on Allen land along the Monongahela River in Washington County (this would later become Allen Township including Allenport and Roscoe PA.). John continued to hold his military rank as a Captain in PA Militia.

At the time their oldest children were becoming young adults, the family migrated to the White Water River area finally settling Brookville Twp, Indiana (Southeast corner of Indiana) about 1805. One family report stated that he built a flouring mill in the vacinty.

Rebecca and her husband John Allen are named in the DAR Patriot Index. Her father Solomon Shepherd is recognized by the DAR for his patriotic service during the American Revolution. His estate suffered depreciation in 1781. [1]
