He was baptised on 5 April 1898 at the Anglican Church in North Ormesby, Yorkshire. Her father was a Joiner of 9 Newby Terrace, Port Clarence.[2]

In 1911 Tom was still living with his parents in Billingham, Durham. Aged 13 and at School.
On 26 September 1914, at the age of 19 and an apprentice Joiner, Tom signed up for the 1st World War at West Hartlepool, short service. He served as a Private with the 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment; 15166. He was discharged on 22 October 1914 after 32 days.
He married Eleanor Annie Barber on 25 December 1925 in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England.[3]
They had two children: Elgar Tom and Joan.
Sadly his wife died in 1936. His son Elgar died in 1967.
