Biography

Robert Shepard, born 17 June 1739, Spotsylvania County, Virginia,

Robert was mentioned in his father’s Will of 1750/1

Item: I give and bequeath unto my two sons, George and Robert, the land I now live on to be equally divided between them before acnolaged (sic) and then to be acnowledged (sic) to each of them.[1]

He subsequently received his half of 108 acres in Spotsylvania Co., Virginia from Benjamin Holloday and Susanna, his wife, on 31 Aug 1751. It transpired that Benjamin had sold the land to Robert’s father George but the conveyance had not been completed by the time of his father George’s death so the land was transferred direct to George and Robert from Benjamin Holloday.[2]

Robert married Sarah Rash. [3]

He had at least five daughters:

  • Nancy Shepard, married William McQueary [3]
  • Sarah Shepard, married William M. Judd [3]
  • Mary "Polly" Shepard, married James McNeil [3]
  • Agnes Shepard, married Thomas Irwin [3]
  • Rhoda Shepard, married John Judd [3]

Robert and George and their wives sold the land they inherited in Spotsylvania back to Benjamin Holliday on 20 Nov 1776.[4]

Robert was granted 199 acres of land on 10 Jul 1788 on Reders River, Wilkes, North Carolina.[5] He received a further 50 acres on 17 October 1796, also in Wilkes on Readey’s River.[6]

Robert died 5 June 1817, Wilkes County, North Carolina.[3]

Did Robert Shepherd and Sarah Rash also have a son, John Shepherd Jr. (1760-1812) who may have married a Phoebe? Earlier today I ALMOST had Sarah Rash and Sarah Jennings overlapping and think I caught everything ... but I need to find out with which parents this John Shepherd Jr. (1760-1812) should be. I know that Robert and Sarah had a different son John Shepherd (who has been seen with 2 birth dates (born either 26 Aug 1773 or 26 Apr 1779), who died about 1803 in North Carolina. I believe he is already linked to Sarah and Robert. Thanks for any help on parentage of the 1760-1812 John Shepherd.

Shepherd-4828 and Shepherd-426 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents. Same wife.

Shepherd-426 and Shepherd-4424 appear to represent the same person because: these were set as rejected, but they look like duplicates to me (same dates/locations/wife). Please merge. Thanks!

I have signed on as PM for this Robert Shepherd, but urge all others who are interested to help build the best possible profile. My only request is that all additions and changes be well explained and properly sourced. Better to state probability/possibility rather than unfounded certainty.
