Biography

John Shepherd lived in Appalachia, in North Carolina.

John Shepherd was born in 1790 in Burke County, North Carolina, United States. His parents were Thomas Shepherd and Nancy Stanton. He married Mary Runyon in 1816. Together they had 7 children:

  1. James Shepherd
  2. Martha Shepherd
  3. Mary Shepherd
  4. Agnes Shepherd
  5. Nancy Shepherd
  6. Matilda Shepherd
  7. John Shepherd

He died in 1865 in Macon County, North Caroilna, United States.

According to the 1850 Census, John was born in Burkie County, North Carolina. John lived in Tennessee from about 1817 to about 1828, as evidenced by the birth places of his children in the same census. At the time hhe moved to what is now Macon County, North Carolina, some of his relatives had already moved there. There are three children listed in this census, but it probable that tey are not the children of John and Polly as that group starts with a Nancy Shepherd (and includes another Mitilda, too, as well as a William). She (Nancy) cannot be the same as the earlier listed Nancy who definitely is a daughter of John and Polly.

Research Notes

John is a difficult gentleman to track. He shows in no census record before 1850, nor in the 1860 census. His birthdate is, therefore, based solely on the 1850 census. His death date is an assumption.
