James was born in 1828. He is the son of John Shepherd and Elizabeth McDonald. He married Ellen Hamilton in about 1853. They had 7 known children.
According to the 1861 Agricultural census for Storrington Township, District 9, James had 125 acres on the farm, his brother John had an additional 100 and his widowed mother another 125 acres, for a total of 350 acres to farm. [1] James died in 1871.[2]
