Marriage

YOBKE'S PENINSULA. [ From the Wallaroo Times] Moonta Destitution.— Last week Dr. Meredith made an application to the Destitute Board on behalf of a woman named Mary Bowden, of Moonta, and her child, four vears old. The circumstances as de- taled by the worthy doctor were truly pitiable. Her husband sailed for Newcastle about five weeks ago in search of work, leaving only 10s. with her. She was obliged to sell her furniture to provide the necessaries of life for herself and child, and, to add to her wretchedness, she was ill of consumption. The Board immediately granted her an order for rations and medical comforts; but before the order reached her, the poor woaian was dead. Yesterday Dr. Meredith made another applica tion on behalf of a woman named Catherine Hodge. Her husband, too, sailed for Newcastle about six weeks since, leaving his wife with only 5s. She bad been forced to sell a portion of her furniture, and in addition to her having to provide for five children, she has now a step-grandchild dependent on her, the daughter of the Mary Bowden before mentioned. We are informed that there are many women at Moonta whose husbands have left them under similar circumstances. Such cases of poverty and paternal neglect are most de plorable. They indicate either tuat there must be a frightful dearth of employment at Moouta and neighbourhood, or that the men who leave their homes in thus manner must be atrociously negli gent concerning tbe welfare of their families.
