Descendant of Gideon Towns.

Marthie was born in 1936, the 9th of 12 children to James Frank Shepherd and Bessie Mae Conley. Her siblings were John Franklin, Lee Gordon, Mitchell, Mildred Evelyn, Louise, Jewell, James Curtis, Sadie Ruth, Shirley Mae, and Bessie Mae.
