Bertha Edna Shepard was born on 6 Jan 1876, and she died on 5 Mar 1912.[1] [2] She was the daughter of Thomas J. Shepard and Elizabeth Overton.[3]
In 1880,[4] Bertha E. Shepard (age 4, born Indiana) was living in Martinsburg, Washington County, Indiana in the household of her father, Thomas J. Shepard (age 29, born Indiana), with her mother, Elizabeth E. Shepard (age 28, born Indiana), and with her Shepard sisters: i) Anna O. (age 4), and ii) Louisa (age 1). In addition, there was a "boarder", James W. Overton (age 21), who was mostly likely Bertha's maternal uncle (i.e., Elizabeth's younger brother). Both Thomas Shepard and James Overton were employed as blacksmiths.
On 3 Sep 1896 in Crawford County, Indiana,[5] [6] Bertha Edna Shepard married Orris Sidney Hiestand.
In 1900,[7] Bertha Hiestand (age 24, born Indiana) was living in Marengo, Liberty Township, Crawford County, Indiana in the household of her husband, Orris S. Hiestand (age 28, born Indiana), with their son, Leslie Hiestand (age 2). At this time, Bertha & Orris had had 2 children, but only 1 (i.e., Leslie) was living. The other child (unnamed) died within minutes of his birth on 8 Oct 1899.[8]
In 1910,[9] Bertha E. Hiestand (age 34, born Indiana) was living in Ada, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma with her husband, Orris S. Hiestand (age 38), and 3 Hiestand children, all born in Indiana (age, sex[M/F]): i) Leslie (12, M), ii) Cleon (8, M), iii) Lucille (4, F). Given that Lucille was born in Indiana in 1906, then the move for Bertha & Orris' family from Indiana to Oklahoma would have likely happened between 1906 - 1910. However, according to Orris Sidney Hiestand, Jr., Orris, Sr. had begun doing construction work in Oklahoma as early as 1901.[10]
In mid-Oct 1911, Bertha and Oris [sic] Hiestand moved their family and household goods from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Marengo, Crawford County Indiana into the house and farm that Orris had recently purchased from W. J. Hawkins, in north Marengo.[11]
Bertha Edna (Shepard) Hiestand died on 5 Mar 1912 in Marengo, Crawford County, Indiana,[2] and she was buried in Marengo Cemetery, Marengo, Crawford County, Indiana. [3] [1] The information for the death certificate[3] for the late Bertha Hiestand was provided by her husband, Orris Hiestand, which includes the names of her parents, her birth date and place; the cause of death was "Vomiting of Pregnancy", and hence Bertha was probably in the first trimester of a pregnancy.
