While searching Google to learn where the name Peasmarsh came from, I found this little nugget at www.Knelle.net/rectory/house/census.html Peasemarsh Old Rectory History Lea Walker Sullivan, 04 Dec 2022:
"Welcome to Peasmarsh Old Rectory - a mid 16th century frame house hidden by 1930's skin.
So who were the people that lived in The Old Rectory in the past centuries? At this stage we must rely mainly on the UK census records other than the one survey undertaken in 1716. In 1870, a gentleman called Mark Antony Lower published Volume I of his 'Compendious History of Sussex: Topographical, Archæological & Anecdotical'. He records that in the '3rd and 4th of Philip and Mary' [presumably 1557 or thereabouts], Viscount Montague sold to one Robert Sheppard the 'glebe of the parsonage or prebend of Pesemershe'. He then goes on to say that the land was still in the Sheppard family in 1719 but was in the possession of the Mascall family by 1743. The survey of 1716 discussed in the history section therefore takes on greater significance as it may well have been a pre-purchase survey of the lands around Peasmarsh Place".

Firstly, going forward a generation, Robert's son Alexander is widely stated to have married Elizabeth Covert. However the Covert pedigree in The Castles, Manors and Mansions of West Sussex clearly shows her to have married RICHARD Sheppard. The dates don't work for this to have been Robert's father Richard and anyway Richard married Ann Atesbury
Then this Wikitree page states that Robert married Elizabeth Covert and cites The Visitations of the County of Sussex: 1530 and 1633-4. The visitation is clear: it states that Elizabeth Covert, daughter of Walter Covert of Slaugham and his first wife (unnamed) married Alexander Sheppard, and that Alexander's 2nd wife was Ursula Knachbull (sic).
And through Wills I have established with little doubt that the Elizabeth who morried Robert (this page) was actually Elizabeth Wells or Rye.
I had previously done a great deal of work on the widespread Covert family, many of who are my ancestors, and I cannot find this Walter who had a daughter Elizabeth. It certainly wasn't Sir Walter Covert of Slaugham, MP, as he died childless and there doesn't seem to be another suitable Walter Covert.
So BOTH historical connections between the Coverts and the Sheppards seem, on the face of it, to be incorrect.
And, I cannot find the Richard Sheppard who was said to have married Elizabeth Covert.
So now I am completely stuck trying to identify the connection between the Covert and Sheppard families. Can anyone help - it wouuld have to be original documents as the incorrect connections I have described above have been endlessly copied !
