Wirt County, West Virginia was formed in 1848 from Jackson and Wood Counties. Jackson County was formed in 1831 from Kanawha, Mason and Wood Counties. Wood County was formed in 1798 from Harrison County. West Virginia became a State on June 20, 1863.
