Joseph Sherman was born on 14 May 1650 ("Born the fourteene day of the third Month") in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony. His parents were John Sherman and Martha Palmer.[1][2]
Joseph married Elizabeth Winship, daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Parke) Winship, on 18 November 1673, in Watertown: "Joseph (sic) Sherman and Elizabeth Winfhip (sic) Joyned in Maryage the eaighteen Day of November in the year of our Lord Sixtene hundred seventy and three 1673"[3][4][5]. Torrey's references: "SHERMAN, Joseph (1650-1731) & Elizabeth WINSHIP (1652-); 18 Nov 1673; Watertown, CT {Farr Anc. 250, 821; Sibley's Harv. Joseph and Elizabeth had children, all born in Watertown[6]:
In 1695 Joseph was chosen by Mary Bullen to be her guardian, as both of her parents had died[18], and she probably lived with his family in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Mary Bullen married Joseph's son John few years later. It is unclear what the prior connection was between the Sherman and the Bullen / Fairbanks families
Occupation
Joseph was quite active in things other than his basic occupations of blacksmith and farmer. He was a soldier in King Philip's war in 1675-76. On Sept. 23, 1676, he is recorded as receiving pay as a soldier in Capt. Jonathan Poole's Company and also in Capt. Thomas Brattle's Company. He attained the rank of Corporal. Watertown functions that he performed include Surveyor; Constable in 1682 and 1684; Tythingman 1685-86; "Hogrif" and Fence Viewer 1692 and 1697, Assessor 1695, and Selectman 1701-1705 and 1709-1712. He was also the Deputy for Watertown to the General Court of Massachusetts 1702-1705.[6]
Death
No death record has been found for Joseph's wife Elizabeth. She likely died in Watertown before her husband died. The Find A Grave: Memorial #52827310 for her does not hazard a death date.
Joseph died intestate, with his probate opened on 29 November 1731. He is commonly assigned a death date of 20 January 1730/1, but no records are found to corroborate this. His son John was the executor. The probate was extended because his son Nathaniel had taken possession of many estate moveables and was less than forthcoming as to what he had taken.[6][19]. Joseph has a Find A Grave: Memorial #52827308.
