Biography

Ann was born in 1614. She was married to George Wood on 07/16/1650. Died 01/14/1690 at Setauket, Brookhaven, Suffolk, New York. Not in Dedham, Essex. If DoB and marriage dates are correct, Mary would have been 36 years old when married to George Wood, indicating a second marriage?

Ann is thought to be the daughter of Edmund Sherman. However DoB does not match.

Research Notes

Existing profile (02/20/2022) is unsourced. Place of death changed fron Dedham, Essex to Suffolk, New York.

Looking for emigration to New England in "The Complete Book of Emigrants 1607-1660" by Peter W. Coldham, I found a Richard Sherman listed as a beneficiary in the Will of a Simon Whiting of Dedham, Essex in June 1637 (quoting from original source "English Estates of American Colonists" Vol 1 by the same author). Later in the same book, a Samuel Sherman of Dedham, Essex Will is probated 1644 and later again, September 1646, Will of Ester Sherman, widow, of Dedham, Essex was probated, mentioning her kinsman Richard Sherman who was in New England. So it seems that there may be links back to Sherman relatives in Dedham.

Possible family connections include: Edmund Sherman b: Abt. 1572 in Dedham d: 1641 in New Haven, CT Joan Makin m: Abt. 1598 in Dedham. Richard Sherman b: Bef. March 03, 1576/77 in Dedham d: May 30, 1660 in Boston, MA married Elizabeth ? This was the Richard mentioned by Coldham?

The name was originally an occupational surname for a cloth finisher, one who trimmed the surface of the finest cloth with shears to remove any excess nap. The Sherman family that lived in Dedham were said to be clothiers.

Colchester and Dedham are adjacent towns in Essex.
