Yates worked for many years as a tinsmith, which may have provided the opportunity for him to have received a cut which allowed the infection which eventually killed him to enter his system. Misdiagnosed for some time as suffering from acute arthritis, he became unable to perform his work. He took up painting decorative scenes on panels of velvet.
