Hugh Sherrat was born by 1593. This birth date is based on the assumption that he had reached the age of 60 years by June 14, 1653 when he was freed from training.
He migrated to New England in 1634, first settling at Ipswich where he became a Freeman on March 4, 1634/5 and was admitted to the church. He received land for a house at Ipswich on April 20, 1635, plus 6 acres planting lot, 10 acres toward Jeffries Neck, 25 acres of upland and meadow, 6 acres of meadow at Reedy Marsh.
By 1642 he had moved to Haverhill where he was an Innkeeper. At Haverhill he was licensed to "keep the ordinary... and to sell wine and strong water at retail sometimes during the years 1647 through 1665. By 1659 the land inventory at Haverhill he had "8 acres of accommodations" - 8 parcels of land, five acres for his houselot, seven and half acres of planting land, 6 acres of planting land over the little river, 3 acres of land, 3 acres of meadow, 2 acres of meadow in he pond meadow, 3 acres of meadow on Hawkes Meadow, and 4 acres of 2 division of meadow at Spicket Meadow. In 1668 there were "four acres of third division meadow" laid out for him, later "fourscore and sixteen acres of third division of upland by the west meadow path" was laid out for him.
Hugh had enough education to sign the Indian deed of 1642 and his own deed of 1662. At times however, he signed legal documents with his mark.
There was a marriage between Hugh Sherrat and Elizabeth (_____) by an unknown date. She died at Haverhill on May 29, 1662.
By February 10, 1662/3 at Haverhill, Hugh had married Elizabeth (_____) Griffin, widow of Humphrey Griffin. She died at Haverhill on September 18, 1670. Anderson in his Great Migration clarifies the identity of this wife when he says, "Elizabeth was most certainly not a daughter of Robert Andrews, but was probably a daughter of Elizabeth, the only known wife of Robert Andrews, with an earlier husband.[1] She received the license to be the Innkeeper at Haverhill in 1666.
No records for children have been found with either wife.
He made several appearances in the Essex court between 1648 and 1662, most often regarding debts. However on April 13, 1675, Daniell Ela, attorney for the selectmen of Salisbury, sued Robert Clement for "having taken a considerable part of the estate of Hugh Sharratt and now refusing or neglecting to provide for him according to his engagement, whereby the town has been obliged to provide for the preservation of the old man's life. Verdict for the defendant."
Hugh Sherrat died before October 8, 1678.
