Biography

Mary Eliza Sherrill was born in January of 1910 to Charles Everett Sherrill (1886–1955) and Eliza Beavers (1881–1969). She is listed with her parents on the 1910 Census in Buncombe, North Carolina[1] and on the 1920 Census in Pittsylvania, Virginia.[2] On January 21, 1928 she was married to William Alexander Cox in Schoolfield, Pittsylvania, Virginia.[3] The couple had one son; John Henry Cox in October of 1928.[4] Sometime between the birth of their son in 1928 and the 1930 Census; her husband William passed away and she is listed with her son as widowed in the home of her parents.[5] She was remarried on January 14, 1934 to James Alexander Casey.[6] The couple are listed together on the 1940 Census with her son from her first marriage and their two sons; Joseph and Charles Casey.[7]

No official records have been found indicating that she divorced Mr. Casey; but it is believed that she did, because at the time of his death in 1965 he was married to Ruby Crawford .[8] Mary is listed as "Mary Eliza White" at the time of her death also indicating that she married again sometime after the 1940 Census and before her death in November of 1995.[9]
