John Sherwin was born in England.

John Sherwin was probably born about 1644 in England[1] based on his age given at the time of his death.

He emigrated to Massachusetts and settled in Ipswich, Essex County[1]. He had granted to him by the town the right to cut trees for fencing, three hundred rails, January 13, 1667.

John married Frances Loomis on 25 November 1667 in Ipswich[2][1]. Their children were:

  1. Robert Sherwin (~1669 - >1726)
  2. Elizabeth (Sherwin) Chapman (~1671 - >1726)
  3. Hannah (Sherwin) Lewis (~1673 - >1726)
  4. Ebenezer Sherwin (1675 - 1712)
  5. Mary (Sherwin) Foster (1679 - ~1740)
  6. Frances (Sherwin) Cummings (1681 - 1770)
  7. Sarah (Sherrin) Goodhue (1683 - >1752).

John and Frances both joined the church in full communion April 12, 1674[1].

After Frances' death, John remarried to Mary Chandler on 30 September 1691 in Ipswich[2][1]. Their children were:

  1. Alice Sherwin (1694 - ~1719)
  2. Abigail (Sherwin) Fitts (1695 - 1745)
  3. Eleanor (Sherwin) Howe (1696 - 1757)
  4. William Sherwin (1698 - ~1792)
  5. Jacob Sherwin Sr. (1699 - ~1792).

He had a seat in the meeting house in 1700 and was on the list of commoners for 1707[1].

John died on 15 October 1726 in Ipswich aged 82[1][3][4].

John's estate passed probate on 16 January 1727 in Essex, Massachusetts, United States.[5]
