John D. Sherwood was born on 1 May 1807 in Hector, Tompkins, New York, United States to Daniel Sherwood (1761-1828) and Charity Unknown (c.1764-1860) . Charity appears on the 1850 census living with him and his new wife Catharine and the children of his first wife, Anna.
