Biography

Morgan Sherwood was born about 1818. He was the youngest son of Thomas and Mary (Pettis) Sherwood of Dryden, Tompkins County, New York. Morgan’s father was born in 1776, the son of Andrew Sherwood (1746-1831) a native or Orange County, NY, who served as a private and 1st Sergeant during the Revolutionary War. Andrew moved to Dryden, Tompkins County, New York where he received bounty land for his service. Sometime after 1818, he moved to Allegany County, NY. [1]

Morgan Sherwood married Lavina Morgan about 1843 and they settled in West Dryden. Their nine children were Catherine, Nancy Jane, Lafayette, Delilah, Mary, Sarah, Frank, Harriet and Cora. The youngest was just a toddler when war broke out. [2]

On August 14, 1862, at the age of 42, Morgan enlisted as a Private in Company I of the 143rd NY Infantry volunteers. He died November 15, 1863 at Nashville, Tennessee. He is buried in the Nashville National Cemetery, Section E Site 72, 1420 Gallatin Road, South Madison, TN. [3] [4]

There is also a memorial to Morgan Sherwood in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Ithaca, New York. [5]
