Son of Samuel II & Jane (Burr) Sherwood, born 10 Feb 1730 in Fairfield, Connecticut. 
He married Rachel Hyde (1786-1811) in CT - parents of Huldah, Sarah, Eunice & Samuel B.
Samuel Sherwood is honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution for patriotic service as a minister. 
He graduated Yale in 1749, and then moved to New Jersey to become a tutor at his uncle's college (Rev. Aaron Burr, the President of the College of New Jersey, later Princeton). He then returned to Connecticut to become pastor at Stratfield parish (now Bridgeport), then at Kensington, then Norfield. He died (May 25, 1783) in Norfield leaving a substantial estate, including two slaves. (Farnham)
