GEDCOM Note ≤p>Notice in the "Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate, 4th February, 1911". -≤/p>≤p>SHERWOOD, Francis - died 3rd February 1911, aged 81.≤/p>≤p>At his residence, Kellyville. Francis, beloved husband of Mrs, Francis SHERWOOD, aged 81 years. The≤/p>≤p>friends of Mrs. Francis SHERWOOD are kindly invited to attend the funeral of her dearly beloved husband,≤/p>≤p>Francis SHERWOOD, to move from his late residence, Kellyville, this Saturday, at 2 o'clock, for the Church≤/p>≤p>of England Cemetery, Rouse Hill. William METCALFE and Co., Undertakers, Parramatta.≤/p>≤p>In the the book - "Kellyville - The Pleasant Village", by Mrs D. Ardley, 44 Wrights Rd, Kellyville, is a photo≤/p>≤p>of an old house with the caption -- "Sherwood's cottage, Rosebery Rd, built c. 1872-74 after the birth of≤/p>≤p>their first child in 1872. Photo: H. Carr." The house was of slab, that is, tree trunks split by the use of wedges≤/p>≤p>and sledgehammer and trimmed with an adze . It had a bark roof and dirt floor. Such floors often had dirt≤/p>≤p>mixed with ox blood, which, when stamped down and smoothed over became rather like an old fashioned≤/p>≤p>brown lino floor. Bark roofs were preferably made from stringybark or iron bark. The bark was put in a hole≤/p>≤p>in the ground and smoked in order to flatten it and make it suitable for use as a roofing material . It was held≤/p>≤p>down by rider poles, and makes a very water resistant and long lasting roof.≤/p>≤p>Ridge capping and guttering were made from the rounded bark taken straight from small saplings. Water≤/p>≤p>could be collected in the same way asfrom an iron roof. Ironbark is a very suitable and durable timber, and it≤/p>≤p>grew in abundance in the Kellyville area. The house was still standing in 1992.≤/p>≤p>In the late 1990's, a local newspaper article titled "Bid To Save Old Cottage", which was accompanied by an≤/p>≤p>artist's impression of " Grandma Sherwood's Kellyville" old cottage, which is in imminent danger of falling≤/p>≤p>down,reported as follows:≤/p>≤p>"A 91 year-old building made of slab and clay is being kept under the watchful eyes of its owners, Mr and≤/p>≤p>13≤/p>≤p>Mrs G. Hickman, of Kellyville, who hope to keep it intact for as long as possible.≤/p>≤p>The old building in Roseberry Road, Kellyville, has not only become the concern for its owners, but for Mr≤/p>≤p>K. Norris at Rouse Hill, who made the sketch of the building.≤/p>≤p>Mr Norris is also a member of the Castle Hill Historical Society and is conducting a study of historical≤/p>≤p>buildings in The Hills district. He is selecting historic buildings and sketching them before they are pulled≤/p>≤p>down.≤/p>≤p>He said this week: "It is heart-breaking to know that an old building which has tremendous historical value is≤/p>≤p>to be pulled down. I makethe sketches now before it is too late."≤/p>≤p>The old cottage was built in 1883 by Frank Sherwood and Jim Armstrong who cut their own timber and built≤/p>≤p>it out of slab and clay. It comprises four rooms, two of which have dirt floors.≤/p>≤p>The house belonged to Frank and Elizabeth Sherwood who moved with their 12 children from Wright Road,≤/p>≤p>Kellyville, to their new home just after it was completed.≤/p>≤p>They owned 10 acres of land surrounding the house and grew citrus and stone fruit."≤/p>Emily Jane Sherwood, the eldest child, commented that all the children slept in the attic roof.

GEDCOM Note ≤p>Francis purchased Lots No's136 and 137 on 18 Feb 1892, and Lots 38 and 39 on 18 Sept 1899, on the≤/p>≤p>Kellyville Estate.≤/p>≤p>Francis Sherwood was listed as one of the 27 signatories to a petition of "Freeholders and Heads of≤/p>≤p>Familys (sic)" to the Postmaster General on November 26, 1888 for a Post Office at the Kellyville Public≤/p>≤p>School and suggested "that Miss Pryce, daughter of the Public School Teacher, be appointed Post≤/p>≤p>Mistress thereof", which was successful. He also supported a subsequent Petition in 1897 concerning the≤/p>≤p>14≤/p>≤p>relocation of the Post Office, but this failed.≤/p>≤p>The December 20, 1893 edition of the Argus reported :- "As Mr Frank Sherwood of this district was≤/p>≤p>milking one of his cows the other day, he made a hit at a calf with his hand to hunt it away, the result≤/p>being that a spike of the muzzle which the calf had on, ran between the two centre fingers
