Biography

Even if insufficient evidence has surfaced to prove the origins of Elizabeth, the wife of John Maddox (of St. Peters and Goochland) with absolute certainty, there is some relevant circumstantial evidence.

A casual review of the internet suggest that Elizabeth Woodson Sherwood[1] could be her maiden name, the daughter of Jacob Sherwood and Elizabeth Radford.

  • A Joseph Woodson, presumably this one, was among the witnesses to her husband John's will, and a William "Redford", perhaps this William Radford, who would be her first cousin, was one who took inventory of his estate;[2]
  • Elizabeth's children's name included Jacob and Ann, perhaps after her father and her maternal grandmother Ann (Massey/Maxey) Radford, and the name Sherwood proliferated among Maddoxes descended from her.

It is said that in her will, "dated 3 Nov 1772, Amherst Co VA, [she] mentions James Maddox, Elizabeth Hancock, Nancy McCraw, William McCraw, Ursley McCraw."[3] But from the context there is no way to know if that is an exhaustive list of people she named whose identities might help use establish hers.

Lacking a birth record, we can probably only safely say that she was at least 16 when her first child was born in January 1719/20 and say she's certainly born before 1705, so the internet's decision of 1702 is as reasonable as anything else.

Elizabeth and John Maddox are supposed to have been married in Essex County in 1718. There is a bit more detail about this Maddox family in John's profile.

They lived for a short while in St. Peter's Parish in New Kent County, where John's family had been for some time -- long enough for their first child, William's birth to be recorded there, but it is believed that before their next child, probably John, was born, that they had removed from there.

In 1733 we see John purchasing land in Goochland County, and believe they were there by then, although in reality they may have been there throughout 1720s as tenants.

In Goochland they raised 11 children, and after John's three patents, lived on property that straddled the James River by Deep Creek and Muddy Creek.

John died in 1748 or 1749, and Elizabeth settled in Amherst County. She died there, as is clear from prior discussion of her will, in 1772 or 1773.

Someone with access to the documents at the Library of Virginia might be able to greatly enhance this profile.

Tom, her death date is established by her probate record, now cited. May we now merge away her twin, please? :)

Sherwood-1155 and Sherwood-392 are not ready to be merged because: The unresolved death date keeps this from being a shoe in.

The difference of 30 some years in the date of death should put this in unmerged match category, since it's half of the known data. Resolve the death date before merging.

Merges for 3 copies of Elizabeth Sherwood are pending. Are there any profile managers of Sherwood-392 who are still active on wikitree? Is there any reason not to merge them?

Sherwood-1155 and Sherwood-392 appear to represent the same person because: Sherwood-1155 is a duplicate of Sherwood-392, where Sherwood-392 is a more complete profile... 1155 should be merged into 392 and the data from 392 kept intact.
