"She attend births of other babies born in Brookfield. I don't know if she was officially a midwife, but that is what she did and she would stay with the family for a week or so."
From the census of 1880 we learn that when Bertha was 3 years old she lived with her parents in Danbury, CT.
Later she lived with her family in Lanesville, New Milford, and attended school there.
Notes from JGP: The 1st 4 years of my life were spent living with my parents and brother in my grandparent's apartment on the 2nd floor of their house on Pocono Rd. Brookfield. They moved to the Pocono Rd. house after they sold the farm on Mountain Rd., Brookfield, Connecticut. Grandpa, Miles A., always had a vegetable garden and Grandma Bertha A. took care of the many flowering plants around the house. At one time Grandpa had a very large, black pig in the back yard. He'd take me by the hand and take me out to see him. That was the only animal that I remember being there. Grandma always had needle work around - hooking rugs, making quilts and crocheting. I remember her always having home made "pot cheese", now called cottage cheese, homemade pickles, and she would often cook up a batch of dandelion greens, although I don't ever remember ever eating any of the dandelion greens.
