Biography

Born at Pope's Field in Hertfordshire, Thomas Shetterden was son of Thomas Shetterden and his wife, Elizabeth Drax. ^[1] He was educated at St Albans School and St John's College, Cambridge, matriculating in 1687. ^[1]

He inherited Ellerton Abbey from his maternal uncle, Henry Drax, a wealthy Barbados sugar planter, ^[2] assuming his mother's family name of Drax. ^[1]

On the 12th of Mary 1692 at St Botolph, Aldersgate, he married Elizabeth Ernley of Woddington in Wiltshire. ^[3] Their son, Henry, was born about 1693. ^[2]

Thomas died on the 11th of June 1703. ^[4]
