Biography

Born at Pope's Field in Hertfordshire, Thomas Shetterden was son of Thomas Shetterden and his wife, Elizabeth Drax. [1] He was educated at St Albans School and St John's College, Cambridge, matriculating in 1687. [1]

He inherited Ellerton Abbey from his maternal uncle, Henry Drax, a wealthy Barbados sugar planter, [2] assuming his mother's family name of Drax. [1]

On the 12th of Mary 1692 at St Botolph, Aldersgate, he married Elizabeth Ernley of Woddington in Wiltshire. [3] Their son, Henry, was born about 1693. [2]

Thomas died on the 11th of June 1703. [4]

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1995 (10 Dec 1861 Letters of Administration (with the will annexed) of the Personal Estate of Thomas Shetterden of Popes in the County of Hertford afterwards of East Greenwich in the County of Kent but in the City of London deceased who died 11 June 1703 in the said City left unadministered by Elizabeth Shetterden widow the relict and sole executrix named in the said will also by Elizabeth Clerk (wife of George Clerk) the daughter and one of the residuary legatees substituted in the said will and also by Henry Clerk the son and administrator of the unadministered personal estate and effects of the said Elizabeth Clerk were granted at the Principal Registry to George William Hughes D'Aeth of Knowlton in the said County of Kent Esq the administrator (with the will annexed) of the unadministered Personal estate and effects of Dorothy smith widow and daughter also and only other Residual Legatee substituted in the said will he having been first sworn. First grant June 1703. The Letters of Administration (with will) granted in August 1715 having ceased and expired. second Grant December 1731 and Last Grant March 1756 all in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury.
