Biography

Abner was born in Canterbury, Connecticut, on 22 July 1747, identified in town records as Abner Shavauleer, son of Elias and Mary Shavauleer.[1]

His father, Elias Cheval(l)ier, was an immigrant from Jersey, in the Channel Islands. His mother was Mary Adams of Pomfret, Connecticut. Phonetic spellings of the family name seen in American records include Shevalier, Shavalear, Shavileer, Shavelier, and Shavauleer. A 1731 document shows Elias signing his last name as Shevalier.[2]

When Abner was still very young the family removed to Amenia, New York, where he and two of his siblings were baptized on 7 March 1750.[3]

Abner Shavileer and Deborah Wood were married on 23 October 1765 by Roswell Hopkins, a justice of the peace of Amenia, New York. The marriage is documented in records of Sharon, Connecticut, a town that is adjacent to Amenia.[4]

Abner Chevalier was appointed guardian to William and Edward Roberts, minor children of Jonathan Roberts, in Dutchess County, New York, on 29 August 1803.[5]
