Maria Shields (married name Barnfather) was born on 9 January 1853 in Ashby, Victoria, Australia (Geelong), the daughter of James Shields and Mary Ann Jenkins.[1]
She married Andrew Barnfather on 21 June 1870 in Geelong, Victoria.[2] Their children were:
Maria died on 1 September 1920 in Chilwell, Victoria[7] and was buried at the Geelong Western Public Cemetery, Geelong West, Greater Geelong City, Victoria, Australia[8].
BARNFATHER.— On the 1st September 1920 (suddenly), at her residence 60 Clarendon-street, Chilwell, Geelong, the dearly loved wife of Andrew Barnfather, and devoted mother of Mary {Mrs. Cook), F. W. (Africa, E.J., H.L., T.S., Isabel (Mrs. H. A. Sadler). and the late C J., E.M., and A.E.R. (late A.I.F.) No Flowers.
The funeral of the late Mrs.Barnfather, wife of Mr. Andrew Barnfarther a well-known and highly esteemed resident of Clarendon-Street, Chilwell, took place on Friday morning. The deceased lady had resided in Geelong practically all her life, and quite recently she and her husband celebrated their golden wedding. The respect in which the deceased was held was testified by the large attendance at the interment, which took place in the Methodist portion of the New General cemetery. The cortege, which left her late residence, comprised the plain hearse and two mourning carriages, and was followed by a number of motor cars. public and private vehicles, the oaken casket being borne from the hearse to the graveside by Messrs. S.T., H L. and E. J. Barnfather (sons) H. and C. Shields (brothers), and J. Cook (son-in-law). The following supported the purple pall . — Crs. J. A. Frier and F. Shannon, Messrs. Geo. Pescott, C. A. Cameron. B. Blunt, A. Galdon, T. Burns. I Champion, W. Bland, L. Hirst, J. M'CauIey, Len Storrer. M. J. Galvins and Geo Prosser Rev. Fred Watford of the Noble Street Methodist Church, conducted a very impressive service, both at the home prior to leaving, and also at the graveside. Mr. Alex. Monro funeral director, of Ryrie-street carried out the mortuary arrangements.
